Developing A Wellness Plan: Mesothelioma & Lung Cancer Treatment

Developing a wellness plan

Based on your diagnosis and the stage of your mesothelioma, your physician might recommend that you undergo a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy. Some troubling symptoms you might develop include abdominal ascites (fluid in the area of your stomach), pleurisy symptoms and pain in your chest, difficulty breathing, and so on.

The physical effects of both your illness and the treatments you undergo can be severe, and the emotional and psychological impact of having cancer can be equally challenging. For this reason, many cancer patients begin developing a wellness plan that includes supplementing their medical treatment with complementary treatments that focus on easing pain, stress, fatigue, and other emotional aspects of their illness.

Mesothelioma treatment
It is important to remember that mesothelioma affects more than just the person with the diagnosis.

Mesothelioma and its treatment affect the entire family, both physically and emotionally. For this reason, it’s important to begin developing a wellness plan that includes complementary treatments and relaxing activities for your entire family. Also, encourage everyone in your family to live healthfully—to eat right, exercise and get plenty of rest. This will play a big role in how well they cope with the grief and stress of your illness. Joining cancer support groups is another great way to help manage the emotional aspects of the illness. Just sharing experiences with people who face similar circumstances can help lighten the emotional burden you and your family are bearing.

Lung cancer treatment
As you begin developing your family wellness plan, write down each idea on paper. Create a schedule of activities on your calendar that works around any lung cancer treatments. The calendar will help keep everyone focused and energized, while also giving them activities to look forward to and encouraging them to take things one day at a time.
